3 Ways Spring Storms Can Damage Your Roof

Updated: Feb 2, 2024

Yes, April showers do bring May flowers, but they also bring thunderstorms that can cause some damage to the exterior of your home. Here are three ways springtime storms can affect your roof.

  1. Hail Damage often looks random with no distinguishable pattern as the chunks of ice hit all over the roof. Damage can look like: black spots, leaving the shingles mushy from the high impact of the hail, loss of granules (the grainy sandpaper like part of the shingle) which may expose the roof felt, the asphalt and or mat may appear shiny, shattered windows, and if you have wooden shingles splits and chips in the material can occur. If you live in an area that frequently sees hail storms use curtains to cover windows incase of shattered windows, and consider investing in a hail resistant material for your shingles.

  2. High Wind Damage can loosen or completely remove shingles -- causing curling and peeling, and complete patches of shingles to fall off. To help prevent damage from high winds, have your shingles placed during the warmth of the summer to help the tar from the shingles melt and create a solid seal.

  3. Tree and Debris Damage often paired with high winds, causing branches and other debris to hit your roof at a high impact. Debris damage can cause shingles to chip and loosen, and can block or bend your gutter system. To help prevent damage from trees and debris, keep over-reaching tree limbs trimmed back and in check.

All of these damages to the roof can lead to indoor leaks and harm the foundation of your home.

After a heavy thunderstorm, take a visual scan over your roof, and look for any of these signs of storm damage. Regular maintenance and up keep is recommended for a strong roof to withstand any storm.
