3 Reasons Why You'll Love an Upgrade to Weather Resistant Roofing Shingles

Updated: Mar 5, 2022

Is your property located in an area with seasonally stormy, inclement, weather?

Impact resistant shingles are an investment that can save your home and your pocketbook.

If you're interested in sustaining the long-term value of your property, then listen up!

Heavy winds, hail, and debris can cause traditional shingles to crack, weaken, and tear away from the roof risking water damage and more to the foundation of your home.

Homes keep us cozy and safe by keeping the natural elements OUT. A compromise to the integrity of the foundation or roof of your home can snowball into much larger damage to your home's long-term value.

Shingles are designed to do TWO things --- shed away the natural elements from your home and bring an element of beauty to your property.

Your average roof shingle is made of either composition, asphalt, or wood. These materials are more affordable, but easily give way when hit with a blunt force and high winds; diminishing their 12-30 year average lifespan.

1. Impact Resistant shingles are designed to minimize the impact of severe storms, and increase the integrity and life of your roof. Impact resistant shingles, or "IR" roofing shingles, are considered

Class 4 quality and are typically made of more durable materials including metals and synthetic materials. Synthetic material "IR" roofs have a lifespan of up to 50 years.

How to receive a Class 4 Roofing Shingle Rating?

Since 1996, the UL 2218 has provided a national standard for rating the impact-resistance of roofing materials. This test involves dropping a steel-ball of various sizes, from 20 feet, simulating 90-mph hailstones. Materials are ranked from weakest to strongest, achieving a rating of between Class 1 to 4, respectively reflecting, based on their resistance of the impact. Class 4 shingles are the most durable.

For more perspective, if this same test is repeated on a standard shingle it would snap in half.

2. IR Roofs Can Save You A Good Chunk of Change

You May Qualify for Insurance Discounts.

Consult with one of our roofing experts and your insurance company to see if you qualify for a discount as a preventative measure to prolong the lifespan of the materials used for building your home. Limiting the need for repairs in the future.

3. IR Shingles Preserve the Beauty of Your Property

With less dents, cracks, peeling, and destruction to your roof, you can imagine a future with less "fixer upper" repairs and more days enjoying your beautiful home.

The downside of Impact Resistant Roofing -- is that there is no shingle that is completely hail proof. Though metal roofs are less likely to crack and dent, they're still susceptible to dents under more extreme weather conditions. This can dampen a metal roof's visual aesthetic, but leave the functionality of the roof in tact, potentially limiting your options for insurance to coverage. Thankfully, Synthetic Materials are much more durable at preventing denting.

All Class 4 shingles out perform and outlast traditional shingles.

Class 4 Impact Resistant Shingles Protect Your Home By Expanding the Lifespan of Your Roof

IR shingles are a class 4 shingle typically manufactured with a SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified asphalt formula — which is also known as rubberized asphalt — to withstand the impact of hail more effectively. They can undergo greater impact than traditional shingles and still not crack, provide both the benefits of increasing a shingle’s impact resistance and helping it weather better over time.

There are multiple architectural and designer IR products, which tailor your roof to your home’s style.
